What is Engineered Wood?
Engineered wood is a category of wood products made by combining wood fibers, particles, veneers, or strands with adhesives and pressing them into panels. The category includes plywood, MDF (medium density fiberboard), particleboard, OSB (oriented strand board), and HDF (high-density fiberboard). Each one is engineered for a specific purpose – strength, stability, finish, or cost. On spec sheets and furniture listings, the same category often appears as composite wood.
The name “engineered wood” sometimes carries a negative connotation, as if it means “fake wood.” That is misleading. Engineered wood is real wood – it has just been broken down and reassembled to outperform solid lumber in specific applications. A plywood cabinet box, for example, is significantly more dimensionally stable than a solid wood box of the same thickness.

- Made from real wood fiber: Just processed and reformed.
- More stable than solid wood: Cross-grain layers (in plywood) or random fibers (in MDF) cancel out the seasonal movement of natural wood.
- Plywood: Thin veneers cross-laminated, strong and stable, used for cabinet boxes.

- Particleboard: Pressed wood chips, lower cost, used in budget cabinets.

Is engineered wood good for kitchen cabinets?
