What is Toe Kick?
A toe kick is the recessed strip of trim at the bottom of a base cabinet, between the floor and the first drawer or door. It creates a small notch – usually about 4-1/2″ tall and 2.5″ deep – that lets your feet slide under the cabinet while you stand at the counter.
Without a toe kick, you would be standing back from the counter by 2.5 inches, which throws off your posture during cooking, dishwashing, and prep. The toe kick is a small detail that quietly fixes a daily ergonomic problem.
Key features of toe kick
- Standard height: 4-1/2″ tall in most American kitchens. Some European frameless lines go slightly taller.
- Standard depth: 3″ recessed back from the cabinet face.
- Material: A separate trim piece, color-matched to the cabinets, installed after the base cabinets are leveled.
- Continuous run: A single piece of toe kick covers all the bases in a row, then is cut at corners for a clean line.
- Floor protection: Hides plumbing notches, scribe gaps, and uneven floors.
At BuyWholesaleCabinets, the toe kick comes as a separate accessory – a 96″-long, color-matched strip you cut to fit your run. It is required on every base cabinet order.
FAQ
Why do kitchen cabinets need a toe kick?
A toe kick gives you space to stand directly against the counter without your toes hitting the cabinet face. It also hides leveling shims, scribe gaps, and any plumbing or electrical that runs along the floor.
What is the standard height of a toe kick?
4-1/2 inches is the standard in U.S. kitchens. This puts the bottom of your base cabinet at 4-1/2″ off the floor and the countertop at the standard 36″ working height.
Do I order toe kick separately?
On RTA cabinets, yes. Toe kicks ship as a separate trim piece because they are cut to length on-site to match your kitchen layout. You order one or more 96″ pieces based on the linear footage of your base cabinet run.
Can I install a toe kick on an existing cabinet?
Yes, if the cabinet was built with a recessed bottom (most modern base cabinets are). You cut the toe kick to length, attach it with finish nails or brads, and caulk the seam where it meets the floor.
